NOW DEATH COMES
“Now death comes” is a radical adaptation of Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, an epic comedy about life and death inspired by the commedia dell’arte.
Knight of morality Molière was quite firm: “We are dying from our medicines, not from our ailments.” Now the playwright is allowed to defend his morals in the Amsterdamse Bos 400 years later.
The status difference of the characters: that of the creator Molière and his creation Argan becomes visible. Head and body collide: Moliere talks, screams and directs, while Argan moves lost in space. He does and shows what he is commanded to do.
We see a man struggling with his mortality, fear and recklessness fight for precedence.
